Latest Exhibition - Uncharted waters 21-28 November

The new work of William Waite is an extremely energetic and exciting collection, 'they're like paintings for space craft man '.. Future Primitive

There is an interesting connection from his Manhattan series back in New York in the eighties, to these new pieces, 'Waves of Dreams' and a major progression, to a more refined and broader range of work.

As William says;

'This new series of paintings is a culmination of twenty eight years of work and study. I first became an Abstract Expressionist when I was living on the Upper East Side in Manhattan in 1980. I worked on the Manhattan series until 1989..... predominantly black and white. After a major illness I changed my style and began extensive studies and experiments in the metaphysical pigment of space. From the Classical to the Sacred and the Modern to the Scilly........twenty years wandering through the genres of art......back to Abstract Expressionism.'

'With my figurative work I have always intended to show the inner life of life..........a seeing into an inner universe......with the Abstract Expressionism I have entered the inner field of vision. a power of symbols that will take us beyond language -- directly into the communication of the heart.'

The work is complimented beautifully by the colours and textures of Essex Tyler's Raku pots which can also be found on the website

William Waite is a versatile artist capable of sustaining several wings of study concurrently. His explorations in Divisionism are but one expression of his approach to art .......inspired by his visit to St Remy ( where Van Gogh was in care ) on his Trading Shoe Leather Tour. Walking Where the Greats has Walked 20004. " I have embarked upon the Divisionist series to lighten my life and broaden my study......................For many years I have pursued the classical, the spiritual and the modern........ cultivating a beautiful hand and a classical eye but I have found myself needing to break new ground and pursue different modes of expression that will compliment the seriousness of the classical discipline that I continue to pursue. ". The Divisionist pieces are drawn with the untrained left hand and painted with the right. " It's exciting drawing swiftly with the left hand....... creating a naive approach to be complimented by the explorations of the intricacies,harmonies and dissonance of the divisionist techniques".
William has chosen to depict his exuberance for his beloved Cornwall where he relocated in 1971. " These divisionist paintings are a celebration of life and light in Cornwall...... intending to promote in the viewer a forgetfulness of burdensome pressures."

The technique of Divisionism is powerful and addictive and though it was pioneered over a hundred years ago there have not been more then a handful of accomplished Divisionists..........the effect of the techniques themselves .... combinations of dashes and dots hatchings and lines have been used by engravers for hundreds of years but for accomplishments in colour there is new ground to break with many colour combinations and density never before approached.
